Archive: New First Responder, EMT, Paramedic and EMS Training Program Focuses on Patients with Excited Delirium

Ft. Lauderdale, FL – August 24, 2010 – Kaplan Fire & EMS Training, a leader in First Responder and EMS training, announces the release of their new Medic Monthly course that focuses on the causes of delirium and the proper caring for patients. This training is important for First Responders, as individuals with altered mental status can be challenging. This EMS training explains ways to protect yourself and your crew, and steps to take when the scene gets chaotic. Featured in this Medic Monthly is Palm Beach County Fire Rescue. “Palm Beach County Fire Rescue has found the Medic Monthly program to be a great tool for our Paramedics and EMT’s. It allows our personnel to receive continuing education at the station level which streamlines our recertification process,” said Lee Forshner, Captain, Training and Safety Division, Palm Beach County Fire Rescue.

After participating in this EMS training Medic Monthly program, the healthcare provider will be better able to:
• Explain some key clinical features and causes of patients with excited delirium
• Understand the scene safety issues when caring for a patient with suspected delirium
• Understand the risk factors for patients developing excited delirium
• Identify various pitfalls in caring for the patient with suspected excited delirium.

“As the First Responder, EMT, or Paramedic on scene, you should be aware of any signs of potential danger that may cause a scene to be unsafe. With proper EMS training, First Responders, EMT’s and Paramedics will learn how to care for patients exhibiting signs of excited delirium that can be quite dangerous. These patients are often chronic drug abusers, exhibit signs of altered mental status, are typically hostile and aggressive, and are usually not cooperative. In other words, these patients are very high risk for compromising scene safety. Keep these things in mind when approaching the potentially dangerous patient,” said Dr Steve Katz.
